Eu Rules For Cleaner Maritime Fuels
European Parliament and Council reached an Agreement paving the way for all ships visiting European ports to use greener fuels helping the EU become climate neutral.
Ships will have to gradually reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting the amount of GHG in the energy they use by below trajectory :
2% 2025 ;- 6% 2030;-14.5% 2035;-31% 2040 ;- 62% 2045; - 80% 2050.
Containerships and passenger ships at major EU ports to use on shore power supply as of 2030
Ships fuel mix to have at least 2% of specific renewable fuels as of 2034
There are still some details to be ironed out and the overall ambition will need to be increased when the Agreement is revised, but nonetheless a hugely important step for green shipping.
The ball is now in the court of IMO/other countries to put in place meaningful measures follow the EU's lead and finally take action on their maritime emissions.
